GOVT STILL HAS MORE TO CONSIDER REGARDING COMMERCIAL CANNABIS INDUSTRY – LAWYER

BREAKING📢: Government Urged to Consider Key Factors for South Africa’s Commercial Cannabis Industry

Prominent lawyer Shaad Vayej has called on the government to carefully evaluate crucial aspects of the commercial cannabis industry in South Africa. Vayej recently participated in a government-led action lab focused on expediting the removal of cannabis from the 1992 Drugs and Trafficking Act before year-end.

The move is a significant step toward decriminalizing marijuana, following a 2018 High Court ruling that allowed adults to consume cannabis in their private homes. Presently, Parliament is reviewing the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill, with recent public hearings advocating for a moratorium on cannabis possession arrests.

Vayej also highlighted a notable shift in crime patterns, observing a decline in cannabis possession arrests but a rise in cannabis dealing arrests. To support the flourishing local cannabis industry, Vayej stressed the need for comprehensive legislation.

South Africa’s cannabis sector presents enormous potential, with growing international demand for medicinal and industrial applications spanning from housing solutions to carbon offsetting.
